TRIP OVERVIEW
We arrived at Camp Sayre in Milton, MA around 4:00 PM on
Friday and got checked in.
Our campsite
was great…a bit isolated and just under ½ mile from the parking lot.
The guys hoofed the gear out to the site and
we set up camp.
We awoke around 6:30 Saturday morning and charged up with a
sturdy breakfast before heading out for the day.
We piled in the vehicles and drove the 10
minutes to the Mattapan Station to catch the T and head into the city.
Around 9:30 AM, we found our tour guide, John Gill – a patriotic
newspaper editor during the revolutionary era – and began our urban hike of the
Freedom Trial.
The guys get some history on the Boston Common and the State
House.
An overview of the Park Street Church and its importance to
the revolution (including the National Anthem). The next stop was a visit through the Granary Burying Ground and after than it was the King’s Chapel.
Had a great overview of the Old South Meeting House and the Old
Corner Bookstore.
Our long discussion of the events that comprise the Boston
Massacre while standing on the original site of the event outside the governor’s mansion.
A quick stop at the Old State House.
Our lunch break at Faneuil Hall / Quincy Market. A much needed respite!
The guys visit Paul Revere’s home in the North End of
Boston.
Our Behind the Scenes tour at Old North Church, let by Tim
(who is a local Eagle Scout). The tour
included climbing into the bell tower, exploring the crypts underneath the
church and the church itself.
Caught! The guys sneak in a quick check-in on their electronics
while listening to a short lecture about the Old North Church and its role in
the revolution.
A nice break at the Bunker Hill Monument and Museum before
heading off to our final destination of the day.
The Hands-On History program at the USS Constitution
Museum. The guys learned about life on
the USS Constitution in various roles (sailor, cabin boy, etc.). They also learned how to pass cannon charges
without dropping them and the basic operations of the ship.
Aboard the USS Constitution – the end of the trail for
us. The guys learn some of the history
of the ship, how she got her name and how she was constructed. While the ship is in dry dock for repairs, we
got to see firsthand how she is maintained and cared for by the sailors.
The guys enjoy the fresh sea air of Boston Harbor as we take
the ferry from the USS Constitution to Long Wharf.
Nearly our last headcount of the day as we get ready to
board the T for the ride back to Mattapan Station.
Mr. Morse is very happy that the day ends with 20 Scouts and 7 adults…the same number we started with!
All-in-all a long, but fun and history filled day. We left camp around 7:45 AM and arrived back
in camp at 7:50 PM. We enjoyed a great
campfire after dinner and most of the guys were out by 10:00 PM.
Sunday morning we rousted everyone by 7:00 AM and enjoyed a
great breakfast before breaking camp and heading home.
